I should have known, I should have seen this coming. Square-Enix has a reputation for letting their fans down and they've done it again.
They put TWEWY characters in the new Kingdom Hearts game for the 3DS and fans began demanding a new game. Developers hinted that they were working on something related to The World Ends With You, and then Square put up a teaser site with a countdown that was clearly about the franchise. Everyone thought it had to be a sequel or else Square wouldn't be making such a big deal.
But no, the countdown ended and it turned out to be an iOS remake.
No one is mad because this is an iOS game, people are mad because Square played with our emotions... again. I guess I know how Mega Man fans feel like now.
